Traveling today with a bike on a train is not a relaxing experience. Will I get on? How many bikes are already on the train? Did I remember to book a bike space? While Scotrail seeks to promote bike hire at selected stations this model does not suit the committed cyclist. If Scotrail are to be serious about integrating rail travel and cycling for leisure, commuting or tourism, the Scottish government should appoint an independent cycle champion. The appointed person would have the authority to hold Scotrail to account for their current provision, seek to improve on train cycle capacity and promote Scotland as a country that demonstrates best practice in sustainable travel. Furthermore, there would be opportunity in conjunction with Scottish Tourism to promote and develop Scotland as a cycle destination.
