School Street Closures

Allow the temporary closure of streets immediately outside schools.

We should introduce a national transport policy to enable any school or community group on behalf of a school, to apply for the streets immediately outside their school to be closed to motorised vehicles at peak times. Following on from the successful implementation of school street closure schemes in East Lothian, City of Edinburgh, and Perth and Kinross councils a national policy would support a rapid expansion of traffic free school streets in other local authority areas. The benefits of closing school streets to traffic at peak times include less conflict between vehicles and pedestrians, improvements in local air quality and supporting behaviour change towards more walking and cycling with a visible change in priorities.
