The Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB), written in 1992, sets the standards for how we design our roads.
All trunk roads are based on this document. Additionally, many local authorities base their own road designs on the DMRB standards, often at the expense of more recent guidance recommended by the Scottish Government such as the ‘Designing Streets’ document.
When the DMRB was first written in 1992, the car was king. As a result, new road designs across Scotland still prioritize private motor vehicles.
By rewriting and fully updating the DMRB to reflect current global best practice used in cities such as Copenhagen, our road network would begin to genuinely prioritize sustainable transport modes.
