In Edinburgh buses travelling along Princes Street are frequently delayed at traffic lights where other roads cross Princes Street at right angles. These delays also impact on trams.
Lothian Road to South Charlotte Street is a particular example.
Some of these intersections carry other road traffic but no buses – South Charlotte Street to Princes Street is a good example. The traffic light sequence could be changed to hold back other road traffic and prioritise those roads where most buses are travelling.
This would give more priority to buses, less to cars and vans and help to discourage cars from Edinburgh city centre – and similarly at other towns and cities.
